Biographical/Historical Note

Cortlandt F. Luce, Jr. (1907-1992) was a professional photographer and supervising agent for Aetna Insurance Agency in Atlanta, Georgia. He and his wife Celia lived in Atlanta from 1948-1992. The couple had two children, Ned, and Carolyn. Additional biographical information about Cortlandt F. Luce, Jr. has not been determined.


Scope and Content Note

This collection of photographs is comprised of images of geographical locations, events, and people in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Included are images of office buildings, government buildings, shopping centers, sports facilities, airports, monuments, churches and homes in downtown Atlanta, Buckhead, Roswell, Marietta, Alpharetta, and Stone Mountain. The collection also includes photographs of events and activities such as the Southeastern Fair at Lakewood Park, and other arts and cultural festivals. The remaining photographs contain images of mostly anonymous citizens going about their jobs, including police officers, barbers, delivery drivers, and service station attendants.


Arrangement

This collection is arranged in three series: (1) Geographic Locations; (2) Events and Activities; and (3) Dixie Camera Club.

Included are photographs of Atlanta City Hall, Atlanta Civic Center, Atlanta Stadium, Atlantic Steel, Biltmore Hotel, Tower Place, Bank of Georgia, C and S. Bank tower, the Equitable Building, First National Bank Building, Fulton County Courthouse, Atlanta Municipal Airport, Georgia State Capital building, Grady Memorial Hospital, Lenox Mall, Life of Georgia building, New Hope Baptist Church, Christ the King Catholic Church, the Omni Complex, Rich’s Department Store, the Cathedral of St. Philip, the Temple, and the Strand Theater. Also included are images of Stone Mountain, Oakland Cemetery, Peachtree Creek, Tanyard Creek, Piedmont Park, Hurt Park, and dozens of aerial photographs of downtown Atlanta.

Series 2: Events and People, circa 1948-1984, undated

This series contains photographs of a variety of events that occurred in Atlanta over the course of several decades. Included are images of the Atlanta Arts Festival in Piedmont Park, the Atlanta Greek Festival, demolitions of unidentified buildings, a visit by President Dwight Eisenhower, a horse race and the Southeastern Fair at Lakewood Park. Also included are images of mostly unidentified people including Charles McCartney, known as the "Goat Man" a family living in North Georgia, and a group of orphans in Savannah.

Series 3: Dixie Camera Club, 1948-1954, undated

33 black and white photographic prints
Cortland F. Luce, Jr. was a member of the Dixie Camera Club; a group of photography professionals and enthusiasts. The photographs in this series include images he took as a member of that club and consist of images of buildings such as Atlanta Terminal Station, Roswell Elementary School, and Morgan Falls School. Also included are photographs of Atlantans at work including airline baggage handlers, an automobile mechanic, a barber, a gas station attendant, a mailman, and a traffic instructor. The final group of images consists of photographs of people in attendance at the Lakewood Fairgrounds in Atlanta. Information on the back of many of the photographs includes the type of camera and film used.
