Biographical/Historical Note

Joe McTyre is a retired photographer from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He has worked as a photojournalist in Atlanta and Marietta, Georgia since 1950. Additional biographical information about Joe McTyre has not been determined


Scope and Content Note

This collection is comprised of images taken by Atlanta Journal- Constitution journalist Joe McTyre, and images of other Atlanta photojournalists. The photographs in the collection include images of prominent individuals in government, business, entertainment, sports, and others who were the subject of news events. Also included are photographs of the physical environment of Atlanta, and in rural Georgia towns. The remaining photographs relate to news coverage of events such as airplane crashes, fires, floods, trials, sporting events, political campaigns, and World War II.

This series is comprised of images taken for the Atlanta Constitution by photojournalist Joe McTyre. The series includes photographs of people and geographic locations in Atlanta, Georgia. The people included in these photographs are; baseball star Hank Aaron, boxer Mohammad Ali, University of Georgia football coach Vince Dooley, educator Benjamin Mays, Atlanta mayors William B. Hartsfield, Ivan Allen, Jr., and Maynard Jackson, and business men Dick Rich and John Portman. Also included are images of Lyndon Johnson, George Wallace and Georgia gubernatorial candidate Howard "Bo" Callaway. The photographs document news events such as the 1967 re-release of the movie Gone with the Wind, and state and national political campaigns. Photographs of geographic locations in Atlanta include aerial views and street scenes in downtown Atlanta.

Series 2: Collected Images, (170 black and white photographic prints) 1889-1985, undated

This series is comprised of photographs collected by Atlanta photojournalist Joe McTyre. The images were taken by other Atlanta photojournalists including Kenneth Rogers, Bill Wilson, Floyd Jilson, Marion Johnson, Guy Hayes, Charles Jackson, Bill Mahan, Bud Skinner, and others. These photographs contain images of politicians, sports figures, journalists, and entertainers. The series also includes photographs of the physical landscape of Atlanta and other cities in towns in Georgia. The remainder of the photographs consist of news coverage of World War II, sporting events, and tornadoes and other natural disasters. Individuals whose images appear in these images include Georgia political figures Jimmy Carter, Max Cleland, Marvin Griffin, William B. Hartsfield, Lester Maddox, Sam Massell, Mack Mattingly, Richard Russell, and Eugene and Herman Talmadge. National and international political figures include Franklin Delano Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Winston Churchill. Sports figures include Bobby Dodd, Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, and Louise Suggs. Other notable figures include Gene Autry, Ed Danforth, Bob Hope, Doris Day, Billy Graham, Susan Hayward, Margaret Mitchell, Ralph Abernathy, Hosea Williams, Wayne Williams, and Robert W. Woodruff. The photographs include images of downtown Atlanta, and its suburbs, as well as images of the Georgia towns and cities of Athens, Columbus, Gainesville, and Toccoa Falls. Notable images of events include photographs of celebrations in Atlanta surrounding the surrender of Germany and V-J Day.
