Scope and Content

During her term as director of the Poverty Rights Office, Muriel Lokey retained documents relating to the P.R.O., Emmaus House, and the activism efforts of Peoplestown residents. Records from the P.R.O. include copies of the Poor People's Newspaper (1970-1993), a monthly publication that contained information for poor people in Atlanta in the areas of housing, social security, welfare, school lunches, health care, the police and the law, politics, and activism. Documentation of Emmaus House and its founder, Austin Ford, include newspaper articles, fundraising letters, annual reports, and financial statements.

Administrative/Biographical History

Muriel Lokey served as director of the Poverty Rights Office (P.R.O.) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Poverty Rights Office, renamed the Muriel Lokey Center in 2008, is an advocacy organization serving low-income residents of Atlanta by advising the poor of their rights and helping them receive available services. The organization is located in Emmaus House in the Atlanta neighborhood of Peoplestown. Austin Ford, the first rector at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Atlanta, founded Emmaus House in 1967. Emmaus House is an inner-city, interdenominational ministry, sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, offering educational, social, recreational, and spiritual opportunities.
