Watts Gunn (1905-1994) was born in Macon, Georgia, on January 11,1905. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Will Gunn. He attended Macon Lanier High School then furthered his education and golf career at Georgia Institute of Technology. Golf history was made when he set the world record for international championship golf by winning fifteen straight holes in the first round of a thiry-six-hole match at the U.S. Amateur tournament in 1925. There, Gunn, also known as "The Southern Hurricane," made it to the finals to compete against friend and rival Bobby Jones. In 1925, he was also East Lake Country Club champion. In both 1926 and 1928, he and Bobby Jones played on Walker Cup teams in Scotland and Chicago, Illinois, that defeated the British teams. At the age of 89, he became the oldest living American Walker Club team player. Gunn took the Georgia Amateur title in 1926 and 1928. He was the National Collegiate Athletic Association Golf Champion in 1927. As a long time Georgia Tech Alumni Association member, he served as president of the Atlanta Athletic Club in 1953 and 1954. Before his death on November 5, 1994 in Atlanta, Watts Gunn was featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not and inducted into the Georgia Tech Athletic of Fame, the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame, the Southern Golf Association Hall of Fame, the United States Seniors' Golf Association, and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. He was married to Jane Forrester. Additional biographical information has not been determined.
