Biographical/Historical Note

Thomas Haverty and his family (immigrants from Ireland) arrived in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1858. His son, J.J. Haverty, started the Haverty Furniture Company in 1885. Between 1889-1909 Haverty went into partnership with A.G. Rhodes and formed the Rhodes-Haverty Furniture Company. J.J. Haverty's son, Clarence Haverty, and grandson, Rawson Haverty, continued the company. In 1943, Clarence Haverty was elected president of the National Retail Furniture Association. Clarence Haverty married Elizabeth Rawson in 1912. Their son Rawson Haverty married Margaret Middleton Munnerlyn in 1951. Rawson Haverty also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of MARTA from 1969-1970. The Haverty family was very active in the Catholic Church in Atlanta. In 1946, and again in 1949, Clarence Haverty was appointed a Privy Chamberlain of the Sword and Cape by Pope Pius XII.
