Biographical/Historical Note

Shaler Hillyer, a merchant, moved to Petersburg, Georgia, in 1799 to work with a Mr. White in Elbert County, Georgia. In order to gather merchandise to sell, Hillyer spent much of the summer of 1806 travelling to New York City, New York. Letters between Shaler Hillyer and his father and brothers indicate that the Hillyer sons were spread all along the east coast which led to discussions about various state governments and the federal government in their letters. Hillyer married Rebecca Freeman, daughter of Captain John Freeman of Walker County, Georgia. The decedents of Shaler Hillyer settled in Atlanta, Georgia, with one of these, George Hillyer, serving as mayor. Additional biographical information about hShaler Hillyer as not been determined.


Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of correspondence from and to Shaler Hillyer. Also included is his journal, along with Captain John Freeman's estate inventory and the journals of Marian (Marion) Jean Hillyer, a descendant of Shaler Hillyer's, as a young girl documenting various trips her family took in the 1880s and 1890s.
