Biographical/Historical Note

Families included in this collection are the Finley family, the Rounsaville family, and the Lowrence family. Relatives of these families lived in Chattooga, Heard, and Clark Counties in Georgia. Finley, assistant surveyor of Wilkes County, Georgia in the 1700s, was the recipient of the 18th century letters. Family members also lived in Ireland, Texas, and Alabama. They are also related to the Pruitt, Hanson, and Stephenson families of Georgia.

Robert Stuart Lowrance, Jr., born in 1906, spent his youth and most of his adult professional career in Atlanta, Georgia. After graduating from Boys' High School, Atlanta, Georgia, and Davidson College, North Carolina, he did graduate work at Emory University, Oglethorpe College and Columbia University. Lowrence organized and directed the North Fulton High School Choir in Atlanta, Georgia, was an active Kiwanis member, and led and sang in many church choirs and special music groups. He excelled in sports and published three volumes of poetry. Lowrence was the recipient of many recognitions and honors.
