Biographical/Historical Note

James D. Waddell, trained as a lawyer, was a colonel in the Confederate Army. He served with the Georgia Volunteers in the 20th Regiment, Benning's Brigade, Hood's Division, Longstreet's Corps. James was a friend of Alexander H. Stephens, and he served as a state representative in 1866. His sister was Elizabeth "Lizzie" Waddell who married Dr. Eugene J. Setze of Marietta, Geogia, in 1857. They had several children including J. A. Setze, E. J. Setze, C. R. Setze, and James Waddell Setze. James W. Setz married Leila McClatchy, daughter of D. F. McClatchey also of Marietta, Georgia. James W. Setze worked as an auditor for the State Department of Revenue. He and Leila McClatchy had four children: James W. Setze, Jr.; Lt. Elizabeth Setze; Adelaide Reynolds Setze; and Major Juluis A. Setze. The Setze family resided at 155 The Prado, Atlanta, Georgia.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains the personal correspondence and memorabilia of two families of two different time periods. The Waddells are the contributors of the Civil War period correspondence which demonstrate in great detail the conditions of the lives of those left at home and of the needs of the soldiers. These letters also demonstrate the role of an officer and the ability to have his wife follow his movements. The later correspondence and personal records were contributed by the Setze family. They contain information regarding teaching school in Atlanta, working for the telephone company and enlisting in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). Also in the collection are newspaper clippings, restaurant menus, and postcards.
