Biographical/Historical Note

The Kingsbery family resided in the Carrollton, Georgia, area during the late 1800s. Sanford Kingsbery, originally from Vermont, was a miller and a businessman involved int he selling of retail and wholesale goods. Edwin Kingsbery, Sanford's brother, was also involved in the wholesale and retail business. Sanford's son, Joseph Kingsbery, was a businessman in Carrollton who moved his ventures to Atlanta, Georgia. Joseph briefly pursued a career in politics, considering candidacy for Georgia State Treasurer. One of Joseph Kingsbery's daughters, Lula LaRoche Kingsbery, was a teacher for the Atlanta Public School System. She later became principal of English Avenue School in Atlanta. In 1934, the Atlanta Public School System built the Lula L. Kingsbery School in her honor. She was married to Fred S. Wilson.


Scope and Content Note

The Kingsbery family papers have been arranged by family member, then further categorized by type of document, e.g., personal correspondence, business correspondence, etc. Sanford Kingsbery's personal correspondence, work and sales receipts, business records, and a license issued by the Internal Revenue Service, authorizing his occupation as a miller, are included. This collection also contains the business and personal correspondence of Edwin Kingsbery. Joseph Kingsbery's personal correspondence, work and sales receipts, business records, and political correspondence are also included. In addition, there is personal correspondence of Mrs. Joseph Kingsbery and documents from Charles Kingsbery's estate proceedings. A large part of the collection contains personal correspondence, public school and related materials, and bills and receipts of Lula L. Kingsbery. In addition, the correspondence of Fred S. Wilson is included. Legal documents, correspondence, advertisements, postcards, political propaganda, and Masonic lodge materials are also in the collection, as well as the draft for a pardon request related to participation in the Civil War in the Confederate Army addressed to President Andrew Johnson.
