Biographical/Historical Note

Charles Edward Dudley (1780-1841) was the son of Charles Dudley and Catherine Cooke, loyalists during the American Revolution. He was educated at Newport, Rhode Island, and married Blandina Bleecker (1783-1863). Dudley was a businessman in Albany, New York, and served as mayor of the city from 1821-1824 and 1828-1829. He served as a New York state senator from 1820 to 1825 and was elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy left when Martin Van Buren resigned to become governor of New York. Dudley served in the U.S. Senate from 1829 to 1833. He had a life-long interest in astronomical science and after his death his widow provided substantial funding to create an observatory near Albany that still bears his name.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of a letter written by Dudley to George Tibbits, a member of the United States House of Representatives from New York. Dudley offers his opinion on an unidentified tariff; United States government appropriations for roads and canals; hostility toward the Bank of the United States; and his concerns about "nullifiers." Of particular interest are his comments pertaining to Indian removal and the "unnecessary excitement" expressed by northern states on that issue. He mentions a recently ratified treaty with the Choctaw Nation and describes in glowing terms the land to which they would be removed. Also included are the address leaf and a full transcript of the letter.
