Biographical/Historical Note

The Rose Garden Club was formed in 1928 in Atlanta, Georgia, by Mrs. Moreton Rolleston, Mrs. Fred Disbro, Mrs. Norwood Griffin, Mrs. Cosby Swanson, Mrs. James Ison and Mrs. Fred Cooledge, Jr. The intent was to encourage the interest and knowledge of gardening, promote the protection of wildlife and birds, and to support community beautification projects. The Club became a member of the Garden Club of Georgia in 1929, and in the same year began a civic project to improve the landscape at McBurney Cottage of Hillside Cottages in Atlanta, which serves as a home for children from disturbed or broken homes. The Club continues to support the beautification of the grounds at Hillside and has expanded their support by providing a horticultural therapy program, a greenhouse, and outdoor classroom for residents. Other projects that the Club has supported include the Tullie Smith House at the Atlanta History Center, the American Red Cross, and the Ronald McDonald House. The Club has also published two cookbooks, Gourmet Gardener and Gourmet Gardener II, to raise money for Hillside and Hospice Atlanta. The Club has hosted and participated regularly in flower shows and has won many awards, including awards for their anniversary histories and scrapbooks, as well as individual member awards.
