Biographical/Historical Note

The International Cotton Exposition of 1881, was an event to promote the cotton industry and those associated industries. The exposition took place from October 5, 1881 to December 31, 1881. Although the exposition attracted less than 200,000 paid attendees, it demonstrated the city's ability to organize a major event. The exposition, hosted in Atlanta's Oglethorpe Park, featured a central building devoted to textile manufacturing displays. Wings around the central building featured other southern products, including sugar, rice, and tobacco.
