Administrative/Biographical History

John Cheston King (1865-1926) was born in Jackson, Louisana, on November 1, 1865, to Owen King and Ellen Fitzpatrick. He graduated from the Atlanta Medical College in 1895, and five years later he completed post-graduate studies in New York City, London, and Berlin to specialize in treating mental illness. He was the owner and medical director of several mental heath sanitariums in the Atlanta area, including Howell Park Sanitarium. He also opened Cheston King Sanitarium on Peachtree Road, around 1914, and then another near Stone Mountain, Georgia, around 1922. He was a member of several medical societies including the American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, Georgia State Medical Society, Fulton County Medical Society, Southern Medical Association, and Chicago Medical Society (honorary member). In addition, Dr. King was a member of the board of trustees for Oglethorpe University and a director of the West End Bank. He married Mary Barr Marriot from Alabama on June 5, 1902. He and his wife were members of North Avenue Presbyterian Church. Dr. King died of kidney failure at Wesley Memorial Hospital on February 7, 1926. He is buried at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia.
