Administrative/Biographical History

The Planters Garden Club of Atlanta was founded in 1931 by Mrs. Philip Thornton Marye (Florence King Nisbet Marye) in order to pursue, "the study and culture of flowers, the study of landscape gardening, and to assist in beautifying civic surroundings." The Club became a member of The Garden Club of Georgia in 1932. One of the Club's earliest projects was the beautification of the Peachtree Brookwood Station of the Southern Railroad. The Club also initiated the Lelia Dangerfield Wild Flower Contest in Atlanta's public schools from 1932 until 1943. Throughout the years, the Club has participated in several of the annual Atlanta flower shows and later at the Southeastern Flower Show, earning many awards. In 1973, the Club became an active member of the Georgia Conservancy to help promote environmental causes. The Club's many civic projects have helped support organizations and gardens such as the Atlanta Speech School Garden, the Atlanta Art Association Patio Garden, the Atlanta Botanical Garden, the Fernbank Forest Association, the Shepard Spinal Center, and the Northside Branch of the Atlanta Fulton Public Library. Under revised bylaws, Planters Garden Club continues to promote the study of horticulture, civic beautification, environmentalism and the objectives of The Garden Club of Georgia.
