Biographical/Historical Note

The 5th Regiment, Connecticut Volunteers was first organized as the 1st Regiment, Colt’s Revolving Rifles, with Samuel Colt as their colonel. The regiment was reorganized on June 20, 186,1 as the 5th Infantry, Connecticut Volunteers. In the spring of 1864, the regiment became part of Knipe’s Brigade, Williams’ Division, participating in the Atlanta Campaign. The regiment was involved in the following engagements: Resaca, Cassville, Dallas, Lost Mountain, Marietta, Kolb’s Farm, Kennesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek, and the Siege of Atlanta.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains a petition signed by officers of the 5th Regiment to Colonel Warren W. Packer, former commander of the regiment, asking him to come back and resume command as the unit anticipates the extension of their term of service. A telegraphic communication adds four more names to the petition.
