Biographical/Historical Note

In 1907, a group of nine women in Atlanta formed The Wednesday Morning Study Club as “The History Class”. The Wednesday Morning History Circle, 1907-1913, became known as the Wednesday Morning Study Circle in 1913 and in 1919, the name of the organization finally changed to The Wednesday Morning Study Club. The club, according to its constitution, was organized for the purpose of “mutual improvement” of its members and consisted of a group of approximately twenty-five women who initially met weekly to discuss a variety of topics selected by the programs committee. The meetings also included a discussion of current events and fiction. Eventually the meeting schedule changed to bi-weekly and finally monthly. The organization constitution and by-laws mandated the selection of five officers: president, vice-president, secretary, corresponding secretary, and treasurer. In addition, the officers plus two other members will form an executive committee for the organization. Each member paid an annual membership fee and a designated monthly amount towards the luncheon. A portion of the annual membership was reserved to cover incidental expenses and contributions to other civic organizations and schools. Three committees seem to exist within the organization: executive committee, nominating committee, and program committee. The constitution and by-laws only provides for the creation of the executive committee.

Scope and Content Note

The Wednesday Morning Study Club Records primarily consist of the minute books, 1907-1979, annual program booklets, 1907-2008, and program papers, 1967-2008. The minute books document the activities of the organization and often provide a synopsis of the papers presented at the meeting. The topic of each paper conformed to a theme selected by the organization and was read aloud at the meeting. The minute books also provided a glimpse of the current events; however, one entry suggests the events should be uplifting and not of a bleak nature. Some events mentioned included the struggles of World War I, Spanish Influenza in Atlanta (1918), support of women’s suffrage, World War II, and the death of Martin Luther King Jr. Other notable events such as the stock market crash and subsequent depression or the assassination of President John F. Kennedy are not mentioned. The annual program booklets detailed the current club officers, the hostess for each meeting as well as the topics discussed.
