Administrative/Biographical History

An international charity, the English Speaking Union (ESU) was founded in 1918 to promote “international understanding and friendship through the use of the English language. Their stated vision “is to provide people in the UK and internationally with communication skills, confidence, and networking opportunities.” Founded by Sir Evelyn Wrench, the ESU has almost forty branches in the United Kingdom and over fifty internationally. The Atlanta Branch of the English Speaking Union was organized in March 1940, and has been active in various ESU programs, such as English in Action; the Books-Across-the-Sea project, begun shortly after World War II; exchange programs to provide opportunities for teachers and students to study abroad; a lecture series; and many other planned events. The organization remains active as of 2010.
