Biographical/Historical Note

Grady Memorial Hospital is a public hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, named after Henry Grady, a prominent Atlanta newspaper editor who died in 1889. It is currently the largest in the state of Georgia. The hospital was established to provide health care for low-income families in Atlanta, and has since expanded that mandate to provide emergency care and other services. The hospital opened in 1892 on 36 Butler Street and has changed locations three times, culminating in 1954 when construction began on a new facility located on 80 Butler Street. Grady was initially owned and operated by the city of Atlanta, but since 1945 has been operated by the Fulton/DeKalb Hospital Authority; a voluntary organization that governs the Grady Health System. Segregated facilities for patients and the nursing staff became the norm after 1912 and continued the mid-1960s. For instance, in 1917 the hospital opened a separate training school for African American nurses called the Municipal Training School for Colored Nurses. In 1952, Hughes Spalding Pavilion opened as a private hospital for African American patients treated by African American physicians. The two nursing schools merged in 1964 when Grady Hospital began desegregating its facilities. The Grady Health System has expanded to include the Diabetes Detection and Control Center, Georgia Cancer Center for Excellence, Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center, and additional programs and services.

Scope and Content Note

The scope of this collection consists of papers concerning the business administration of the hospital, including early minute books from the hospital Board of Trustees, minute books of staff meetings, and correspondence from the medical staff. The collection also holds material from the School of Nursing and School of Practical Nursing, including bulletins, newsletters, alumni information, and lecture notes. As Nursing Education becomes more specialized, separate school specialties maintain some files. Bond issues in 1940 to raise $4 million and the development of the Fulton DeKalb Hospital Authority files are also part of the collection. There are also a number of scrapbooks compiled by Nancy C. Wooten, R. N. who worked for 32 years in various positions at the hospital, including Registrar and Field Director for the Nursing School as well as administrative positions within the hospital.

Arrangement

Materials relating to the School of Nursing are followed by materials relating to the School of Practical Nursing followed by administrative files of the hospital and schools of specialization. The Nancy C. Wooten collection and minutes of committees and the Board of Trustees are followed by the oversize scrapbooks.
