Scope and Content Note

This collection contains an autobiography of Atlanta merchant Sidney Root. Mr. Root writes about moving to Atlanta in 1857 and building a house on Washington Street. He writes about his dry goods business, Beach and Root and its role in the Civil War. He writes about his exile during the Civil War and his return to Atlanta in 1878. He writes about becoming a trustee of Atlanta Baptist Seminary and of Spelman College. He references his involvement in Atlanta parks and specifically the development of Grant Park.
