Biographical/Historical Note

Augustus (Gus) Berman (1882-1972) was born around 1882 in Russia. He came to the United States in 1895 and became a naturalized citizen in 1910. In 1905, he married Gertrude (Gussie) Weinberg. Gertrude Weinberg was born around 1880 in Russia, and she immigrated to the United States with her parents, Isaac and Rebecca Weinberg, in 1895. She had three siblings: Lena, Sadie and Louis. Sadie Weinberg married Meyer Schur and Lena Weinberg married Dr. Louis C. Rouglin. Isaac and Louis Weinberg and Meyer Schur ran the Bermarine Medical Company, located in Atlanta, which later became the Bermarine Perfumery Company. Augustus Berman was the president of Exelento Medical Company. Augustus and Gertrude Berman had at least five children. Augustus Berman died on August 3, 1945 and Gertrude Berman died on December 19,1972.

Scope and Content Note

Included in this collection is a certificate of naturalization for Augustus Berman and a reissued marriage license for Augustus and Gertrude Berman. Also included is a letter of acknowledgement to Gertrude Berman from Mrs. Abe Fitterman, President of Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, for the donation of a sewing machine, and a Georgia medical license issued to Louis C. Rouglin.
