Biographical/Historical Note

Founded in 1894 by Mrs. Isaac Boyd, Mrs. William T. Newman, and other Atlanta matrons, the Every Saturday Club was one of the first study clubs founded in Atlanta. Boyd was elected the first president and the club operated out of her home. The object of the organization, as stated in the by-laws, was the "promotion of friendship, of wider culture and earnest study." By 1917, the Every Saturday Club was a member of the Georgia Federation of the General Federation of Women's Clubs. The club is governed by elected officers such as a president and secretary, while a committee determines the topic of each meeting. The club is limited to 21 members. Until the 1980s, the Club met every Saturday from September to May to hear lectures by members or guest speakers on history, literature, politics, and many other topics. After that date, the Club would meet one Saturday a month.
