Biographical/Historical Note

Julius Frank Beck (1865-1941) was born in New York in 1865. By 1882, he was living in Atlanta and in April 1888 he married Vera Hall. He owned and operated Troy Steam Laundry from 1887-1928 and Beck Steam Laundry intermittently from 1889-1916. He served as President of the companies while his brother, Gabriel, served as Vice President. By 1921, the business name had changed from Troy Steam Laundry to Troy Laundry and Cleaning Company. The main office for Troy Steam Laundry was located at 38 North Forsyth Street. In 1898, Beck opened a Troy Steam Laundry facility at 208-212 Houston Street, which was designed by Walter T. Downing, Atlanta architect, and built by contractors William H. Venable and George E. Murphy. J. Frank Beck also owned and operated the Atlanta Towel Supply Company, Atlanta Steam Laundry, Atlanta Carpet Cleaning Company, and Southern Dye Works. In addition, he worked as Treasurer of the Bully Choop Gold Mining Company from 1909-1914 and served as a City Councilman for seventeen years. Julius Frank Beck died in 1941.

Scope and Content Note

The documents in this collection pertain to companies owned by Julius Beck; the Troy Steam Laundry Company and the Beck Steam Laundry Company. This collection includes: J. Frank Beck’s stock certificates; articles of agreement for building the Troy Steam Laundry; contract signed by George E. Murphy and William H. Venable in which they agree to construct the Troy Steam Laundry building on Houston Street; account balance for work on laundry building signed by Walter T. Downing; accounting paperwork for construction work on Troy Steam Laundry building; a notice certifying that plumbing bills for Troy Stream Laundry had been paid; and a notice signed by Geo. E. Murphy stating that all labor and material had been paid for by J. Frank Beck.
