Biographical/Historical Note

William H. Parkins, son of George and Martha Howell Palmer Parkins, was born October 11, 1836 in New York State. He lived in South Carolina at the outbreak of the Civil War and made his way through Confederate and Union lines to settle in Illinois for the duration. In 1868, Parkins came to Atlanta to become an architect. His works include the Immaculate Conception Church; the original Kimball House; a home later to become the first governor's mansion in Atlanta. At the height of his career in 1879 he became ill and took up residence with his family on a farm at Dickey in Calhoun County, Georgia and died there at age 57 on January 29, 1894.
