Administrative/Biographical History

Dorothy Orr (1887-1975), born Martha Orr to Martha Mood Reynolds and Edgar Harold Orr, was a teacher in the Atlanta public school system and a principal of many elementary schools. She graduated from Emory University in 1930 and went on to receive her Masters of Arts there in 1932. While at Emory, she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society and one of the founders of Kappa Delta Epsilon, a fraternity for students in education. She was awarded Atlanta's Woman of the Year in 1950 for her work as a historian. She published a biography of her grandfather, Gustavus John Orr (1819-1887), describing the South before the Civil War and the effects of Reconstruction.
