Administrative/Biographical History

Arthur Montgomery (1854-1940) was born at Madison Station, Mississippi, the son of Andrew Jackson Montgomery and Susan Dixon Montgomery. He married Anna Mann (d. 1937) and in 1896 moved to Atlanta, Georgia. There he met Asa Candler, who had recently purchased from the inventor a new beverage called Coca-Cola. With his two closest friends, J. B. Whitehead and J. T. Lupton, Montgomery formed the Atlanta Coca-Cola Bottling Company for the purpose of manufacturing and bottling Candler's beverage. Arthur served the company as General Manager then as President until his death. He was succeeded as President by his adopted son, LaFayette (1889-1964) who joined the company in 1908. Lafayette retained the Presidency until 1958 when he was elected Chairman. He in turn was succeeded as President by his son, Arthur L. Montgomery.
