Scope and Content

This collection contains copies and transcripts of two letters written by Dr. Asa W. Griggs in West Point, Georgia to his wife, Lois. The first letter, written on July 14, 1885, informs his wife that everything at home is in order and also sends his love to her and other family members. The next letter, written on March 20, 1888, informs Lois of a fire in West Point that burned from Wrights Hall to Billy Schaefer’s house. He also notes that a check for ten dollars he sent her got lost in the mail, and asks her to let him know how much money he should send.

Administrative/Biographical History

Asa Wesley Griggs (1827-1900) was born in Putnam County, Georgia, on Dec. 11, 1827. He became a medical doctor. Dr. Griggs was married twice: first to Rebecca Elizabeth Davenport (1834-1860), and second to Lois Ann McCants (1842-1894), daughter of Dr. Robert P. McCants. Asa W. and Rebecca had two children: John Wesley and Persia. Asa W. and Lois Griggs had five children: Carry Lou, Robert S., Asa W., Irna, and Alfred. In the 1880 Federal Census the Griggs live in Bluffton, Chambers County, Alabama.
