Biographical/Historical Note

Beverly Means DuBose (1886-1953) was the son of Robert Marion (1841-1907) and Elizabeth (Egleston) DuBose (1849-1918). Beverly was born in Sewanee, Tennessee, and attended the University of the South in Sewanee. He came to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1906 to work in the insurance industry with his cousin, Thomas Egleston. DuBose married Lula Dean Jones (1842-1961) in 1915 and the couple had two children: Beverly Means, Jr. (1918-1986) and Elizabeth (DuBose) Skiles (1922-2000). DuBose worked for the insurance firm Perdue-Egleston from 1906 to 1923. He later became a partner in the firm DuBose-Egleston. He served on the board of the Atlanta Stove Works, was a trustee of the Egleston Hospital for Children and the Girl Scouts of America, and a member of the Civitan Club and Piedmont Driving Club. He was president of the Atlanta Historical Society (1948-1952); vice president of the Atlanta Art Association; and a trustee of both the High Museum and the Atlanta Music Club. DuBose collected books, manuscripts, and pictures related to the Civil War. Beverly Means DuBose, Jr. (1917-1986) married Frances Henley Woodruff (b. 1919), and they had two children: Beverly Means DuBose, III (b. 1940) and Dean Woodruff (DuBose) Smith (b. 1947). DuBose, Jr. graduated from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1939 and went to work at Perdue-Egleston; the firm's name soon changed to DuBose-Egleston. He served as an officer in the U. S. Navy (1943-1946) and was stationed on the aircraft carrier U. S. S. Franklin D. Roosevelt. Later, he returned to Atlanta and worked as an executive with Johnson and Higgins Insurance Company, the largest privately owned insurance firm in the nation. He was tasked with opening the South and maintained the only office the firm had south of Philadelphia. Johnson and Higgins purchased DuBose-Egleston from DuBose, Jr. in 1956. Upon his retirement in 1982, DuBose, Jr. had become a partner and had opened offices for the firm in Miami, Birmingham, Nashville, Charlotte, New Orleans, Dallas, and Houston. DuBose, Jr. was a charter member of the Civil War Roundtable of Atlanta (1949) and later served as president (1951-1958). He was also a member of the Georgia Civil War Centennial Commission (1961-1965) and served as chairman (1963-1965). DuBose, Jr. was president of the Atlanta Historical Society on two occasions and was board chairman of the society for many years. He was a member of the Capital City Club and the Piedmont Driving Club. Beverly DuBose, III was involved in real estate development and construction in Atlanta and, with his father, assembled the largest private collection of Civil War military equipment. He is a graduate of Washington and Lee University, and served three years in the U. S. Navy. He served on the board of trustees for several institutions including Washington and Lee University; the Civil War Trust; the Gettysburg Foundation; and the American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar. He has served on the board of trustees of the Atlanta Historical Society since 1989 and served two terms as its president (1996-2000). DuBose III is a member of the board of The Museum of the American Revolution and has received the John Macpherson Berrien Award for Life Time Achievements in History from the Georgia Historical Society. He is a member of the Society of the Cincinnati and the Company of Military Historians as well as the Piedmont Driving Club. Additional biographical information about the DuBose family has not been determined.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains primarily the personal and professional papers of Beverly Means DuBose, Jr. The bulk of the personal papers document DuBose's military service in the United States Navy. There is an assortment of training materials and periodicals issued by a variety of military agencies. Also included in this series are a few presentations given by DuBose and materials pertaining to the anti-communism movement in the United States in the early 1960s. The professional papers represent the bulk of the collection. These papers document DuBose's interest in the Civil War and extensive research of the events of the war as well as material objects related to the war. Research materials include those of Sydney Kerksis, a fellow Civil War historian and friend of DuBose. DuBose's research materials contain notes on specific items as well as broader topics such as small arms, cannons, belt plates, and the like. DuBose kept records for most items he purchased including correspondence from the seller and other experts in the field; receipts of purchase; and research notes which often provided provenance information. DuBose, considered an expert on the Civil War, received many inquiries regarding events related to the Civil War and objects individuals held in their personal collections or family heirlooms. Many of the these inquiries are found in subseries one. There is also material pertaining to the Georgia Civil War Centennial Commission and DuBose's involvement in the organization. DuBose displayed his relics in several rooms in his home and other venues in Atlanta. He also published a small guide for visitors to his home. Subseries four contains the notes and several examples of the brochure as well as exhibit designs and text panel drafts. Local venues included Rich's Department Store and the Bank of Georgia building. DuBose also played a role in the development and design of several Civil War exhibitions at the Atlanta Historical Society. Some of the notes and exhibit information for these exhibitions can be found in this same subseries. Maps were an integral part of DuBose's research. Maps found in subseries ten document many of the battlefields and other war related sites he visited. Other maps used for research include topographic maps and copies of original battlefield maps. There is also a small sampling of maps drawn by soldiers during the war and maps drawn by Wilbur G. Kurtz as part of his research pertaining to the Atlanta Campaign.
